Getting a website together

Your company may not be ready for a comprehensive website but you know that having an online presence is important as it is often the main way that potential donors and customers get their first impression of you.

Squarespace

One of the best drag and drop sites is Squarespace. Again, we have found it easy to use with good design templates which look good. It is easy to create and edit. Squarespace has good bandwith and storage, which make it even more attractive for newcomers to the online world.

Like Wordpress, Squarespace is responsive allowing it to automatically fit tablet and smartphone screens. Given that an increasing number of people are accessing websites from smartphones, this is an important consideration.

A downside is that Squarespace has paid plans. You are given a free domain for the first year but are charged thereafter.

Tumblr

Tumblr is completely free, including adding your own domain name. It offers a simple set up. All you need to do is register an account and pick a template, of which there are many. It is good for blogging and uploading photographs so if your business is visual, Tumblr is a good starting point.

Many people think that Tumblr is social media. We don’t because it offers limited interaction with the public. It is far more useful as a way of posting of information that can then be shared.

WordPress

We use WordPress for many of our clients, as well as our own blog the grain, the brain, the train.

There are many advantages to WordPress, including security. Wordpress comes with a free domain name and you are able to use their hosting service. If you go this route, you receive 3GB of storage space and unlimited bandwidth.

Or, if you prefer, you can run it off your own web host (if you have one set up). You have to own a domain name.

WordPress is easy to use, has many themes and plug-ins for just about any need and is easy to update.
